German Pork Chops and Sauerkraut Casserole

This hearty German-inspired comfort meal combines juicy pork chops, tangy sauerkraut, sweet onions, and melted cheese in one delicious baked casserole. It’s a simple family dinner packed with flavor.

Ingredients

  • 6 bone-in pork chops
  • 24 oz (680 g) sauerkraut, drained
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  3. Spread the sauerkraut evenly across the bottom of the dish.
  4. Top with the sliced onions.
  5. Pour the chicken broth over the mixture.
  6. Season the pork chops with garlic powder and black pepper.
  7. Arrange the pork chops on top of the sauerkraut.
  8. Dot with butter.
  9. Cover tightly with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  10. Remove the foil, sprinkle with Swiss cheese, and bake another 15–20 minutes until the pork is cooked through and the cheese is melted.
  11. Serve hot.

Optional Additions

  • 1 apple, thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon caraway seeds
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • Fresh parsley for garnish
