German Pork Chops and Sauerkraut Casserole
This hearty German-inspired comfort meal combines juicy pork chops, tangy sauerkraut, sweet onions, and melted cheese in one delicious baked casserole. It’s a simple family dinner packed with flavor.
Ingredients
- 6 bone-in pork chops
- 24 oz (680 g) sauerkraut, drained
- 1 large onion, sliced
- 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
- 1 cup chicken broth
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon butter
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Spread the sauerkraut evenly across the bottom of the dish.
- Top with the sliced onions.
- Pour the chicken broth over the mixture.
- Season the pork chops with garlic powder and black pepper.
- Arrange the pork chops on top of the sauerkraut.
- Dot with butter.
- Cover tightly with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
- Remove the foil, sprinkle with Swiss cheese, and bake another 15–20 minutes until the pork is cooked through and the cheese is melted.
- Serve hot.
Optional Additions
- 1 apple, thinly sliced
- 1 teaspoon caraway seeds
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- Fresh parsley for garnish
