Slow Cooker Swiss Steak Meat Patties

This old-fashioned comfort food features juicy beef patties slowly simmered in a rich tomato gravy with onions and green peppers. The slow cooking makes the meat incredibly tender while the savory sauce is perfect for spooning over mashed potatoes or rice.

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs lean ground beef
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 (28 oz) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 (14.5 oz) can diced tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, Italian seasoning, and black pepper.
  2. Mix gently and shape into 4–6 large oval patties.
  3. Brown the patties in a skillet for 2–3 minutes per side (optional but recommended).
  4. Layer the sliced onions and green peppers in the bottom of the slow cooker.
  5. Place the beef patties on top of the vegetables.
  6. Mix together the crushed tomatoes, diced tomatoes, tomato paste, beef broth, and sugar if using. Pour over the patties.
  7. Cover and cook on LOW for 6–7 hours or on HIGH for 3–4 hours, until the patties are tender and the sauce is rich.
