Homemade Crunchy Fried Pickles

Ingredients:

  • 1 jar of sliced dill pickles (approximately 24 ounces)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • Oil, for frying

Preparation:

1. Prepare the Pickles:

Drain the pickle slices and pat them dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture. This step is crucial for ensuring the batter adheres properly and results in a crispy coating.

2. Set Up the Breading Stations:

In a small bowl, combine flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper.

In a second bowl, whisk together eggs and buttermilk.

Place cornmeal in a third bowl.

3. Coat the Pickles:

Dredge each pickle slice in the flour mixture, shaking off any excess.

Dip the floured pickle slice into the egg mixture, allowing any excess to drip off.

Finally, coat the pickle slice with cornmeal, pressing gently to ensure it adheres well.

4. Fry the Pickles:

Heat a generous amount of vegetable oil in a large pan over medium-high heat until it reaches 375Ā°F (190Ā°C).

Fry the pickles in small batches to avoid overcrowding the pan. Cook each batch for approximately 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy.

Remove the pickles with a slotted spoon and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.

5. Serve:

Enjoy the hot, crispy fried pickles with your favorite dipping sauces, such as ranch, spicy mayo, or barbecue sauce.

Tips for Perfect Fried Pickles:

  • Ensure the pickles are thoroughly dried before coating them to help the breading adhere better and achieve maximum crispiness.
  • Monitor the oil temperature to maintain it at around 375Ā°F (190Ā°C). If the oil is too cool, the pickles will absorb more oil; if too hot, they may burn.
  • Serve immediately for the best taste. To keep them warm, place them in a single layer on a baking sheet in a low oven (around 200Ā°F) until ready to serve.

Fried pickles offer a delightful Southern touch to any gathering, making them a perfect choice for parties, family meals, or as a savory snack. Try this recipe and watch how quickly they disappear!
