The Ultimate Chocolate Cake Recipe

Ingredients

For the Cake:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup hot water

For the Frosting:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • A pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix the milk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract until well combined.
  4. Gradually combine the wet ingredients with the dry ingredients, stirring until smooth.
  5. Slowly add the hot water to the mixture, stirring constantly until the batter is fully blended.
  6. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
  7. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then, transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

For the Frosting:

  1. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter using an electric mixer until creamy.
  2. Gradually add the powdered sugar, cocoa powder, milk, vanilla extract, and salt to the butter, mixing on low speed until smooth and fluffy.
  3. Once the cakes have cooled completely, frost them generously.
  4. For the best results, refrigerate the cake for a short time before serving.
