Ingredients:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 onion, finely diced
  • ½ green bell pepper, finely diced
  • 24 egg roll wrappers
  • 12 slices American cheese
  • ¾ cup vegetable oil for frying

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Filling:

Heat a skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, making sure not to over-crumble it, about 5-7 minutes.
Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper. Once fully incorporated, remove the mixture from the pan and set aside.

2. Sauté the Vegetables:

In the same skillet, melt the butter. Add the diced onion and bell pepper and sauté until softened and caramelized, approximately 5-7 minutes.
Return the cooked beef to the pan and mix everything thoroughly. Allow the filling to cool slightly.

3. Assemble the Egg Rolls:

Lay each egg roll wrapper on a flat surface. Place half a slice of American cheese on each wrapper, followed by 3 tablespoons of the beef filling.
To wrap, fold the bottom corner over the filling, then fold in the sides, using water to moisten and seal the edges. Roll the wrapper tightly to form the egg roll.

4. Fry to Perfection:

Heat about 1 inch of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Fry 3-4 egg rolls at a time until golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes per batch.
Repeat with the remaining rolls. Drain on a paper towel-lined plate before serving.

Tips for the Best Philly Cheesesteak Egg Rolls:

  • Meat Choice: While ground beef is convenient, feel free to use thinly sliced ribeye or flank steak for a more authentic Philly cheesesteak experience. Just be sure to cut the steak into bite-sized pieces for easy filling.
  • Cheese Options: Experiment with cheese! Provolone, Swiss, or pepper jack can offer different flavor profiles, depending on your preference.
  • Peppers and Onions: For more vibrant color, use a mix of red, yellow, or orange bell peppers. Red onions also add a slightly sweeter touch—just be sure to dice them finely.
  • Wrapping the Egg Rolls: Don’t worry if you’re unfamiliar with wrapping egg rolls; most packages include step-by-step instructions. Seal the edges with a little water to ensure they stay intact while frying.
  • Dipping Sauces: Elevate your egg rolls by serving them with dipping sauces. Cheese sauce, ranch, horseradish, or BBQ sauce all pair well with these crispy treats.
