Old-Fashioned Cabbage with Sausage & Bacon

🥬 Old-Fashioned Cabbage with Sausage & Bacon

This good old-fashioned cabbage dish is packed with comfort and flavor.
Cooked in bacon grease with sausage, peppers, onions, butter, and plenty
of seasoning, it’s a humble, hearty meal that tastes even better the next day.

🧾 Ingredients

  • 1 large head green cabbage, chopped
  • 12 oz smoked sausage, sliced
  • 6 slices bacon, chopped
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • ½ cup water or chicken broth
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • Garlic powder, to taste
  • Onion powder, to taste
  • Paprika or crushed red pepper flakes (optional)

👩‍🍳 Instructions

  1. In a large skillet or pot, cook chopped bacon over medium heat until crispy.
  2. Leave the bacon grease in the pan and add sliced sausage. Brown lightly.
  3. Add onion and bell pepper; cook until softened.
  4. Stir in butter and let it melt into the mixture.
  5. Add chopped cabbage and toss gently to coat with the bacon grease.
  6. Pour in water or broth. Season generously with salt, pepper, garlic powder,
    onion powder, and optional spices.
  7. Cover and cook over medium-low heat for 25–35 minutes, stirring occasionally,
    until cabbage is tender.
  8. Taste and adjust seasoning before serving.

  • Total Time: About 45 minutes

This dish gets even better the next day. Serve it with cornbread or over rice
