🥬 Old-Fashioned Cabbage with Sausage & Bacon
This good old-fashioned cabbage dish is packed with comfort and flavor.
Cooked in bacon grease with sausage, peppers, onions, butter, and plenty
of seasoning, it’s a humble, hearty meal that tastes even better the next day.
🧾 Ingredients
- 1 large head green cabbage, chopped
- 12 oz smoked sausage, sliced
- 6 slices bacon, chopped
- 1 large onion, sliced
- 1 green bell pepper, sliced
- 2 tablespoons butter
- ½ cup water or chicken broth
- Salt, to taste
- Black pepper, to taste
- Garlic powder, to taste
- Onion powder, to taste
- Paprika or crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
👩🍳 Instructions
- In a large skillet or pot, cook chopped bacon over medium heat until crispy.
- Leave the bacon grease in the pan and add sliced sausage. Brown lightly.
- Add onion and bell pepper; cook until softened.
- Stir in butter and let it melt into the mixture.
- Add chopped cabbage and toss gently to coat with the bacon grease.
- Pour in water or broth. Season generously with salt, pepper, garlic powder,
onion powder, and optional spices. - Cover and cook over medium-low heat for 25–35 minutes, stirring occasionally,
until cabbage is tender. - Taste and adjust seasoning before serving.
