Old-Fashioned Baked Egg Custard
This classic baked custard is a timeless dessert made with just a handful of pantry staples. Rich, silky, and lightly caramelized on top, it’s an old-fashioned favorite that’s both inexpensive and incredibly satisfying.
Ingredients
- 4 large eggs
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- Ground nutmeg or cinnamon (optional, for topping)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 325°F (163°C).
- Whisk together the eggs, sugar, vanilla, and milk until smooth.
- Pour the mixture into a greased 2-quart baking dish or individual ramekins.
- Sprinkle the top lightly with nutmeg or cinnamon if desired.
- Place the baking dish in a larger roasting pan and add hot water until it reaches halfway up the sides (water bath).
- Bake for 45–55 minutes, or until the center is just set.
- Let cool for 15 minutes, then chill or serve warm.
