Old-Fashioned Baked Egg Custard

This classic baked custard is a timeless dessert made with just a handful of pantry staples. Rich, silky, and lightly caramelized on top, it’s an old-fashioned favorite that’s both inexpensive and incredibly satisfying.

Ingredients

  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Ground nutmeg or cinnamon (optional, for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 325°F (163°C).
  2. Whisk together the eggs, sugar, vanilla, and milk until smooth.
  3. Pour the mixture into a greased 2-quart baking dish or individual ramekins.
  4. Sprinkle the top lightly with nutmeg or cinnamon if desired.
  5. Place the baking dish in a larger roasting pan and add hot water until it reaches halfway up the sides (water bath).
  6. Bake for 45–55 minutes, or until the center is just set.
  7. Let cool for 15 minutes, then chill or serve warm.
