This Classic Patty Melt is a delicious mix between a burger and a grilled cheese sandwich ā juicy beef patties, caramelized onions, and melted Swiss cheese between perfectly toasted rye bread.
Itās comforting, nostalgic, and absolutely irresistible!
Ingredients
- 1 lb (450g) ground beef
- 1 small onion, thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 6 slices of rye or sourdough bread
- 6 slices of Swiss or American cheese
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- Butter for spreading on bread
Instructions
- In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter and add the sliced onions.
Cook slowly for 10ā15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden and caramelized. Remove and set aside. - Season the ground beef with salt and pepper, then form into 3 thin patties about the size of your bread slices.
- Cook patties in the same skillet for about 3ā4 minutes per side, until browned and cooked through. Remove from the skillet.
- Spread butter on one side of each bread slice. Place a slice butter-side down in the skillet, then layer with cheese, a beef patty, caramelized onions, another slice of cheese, and top with another slice of bread (butter-side up).
- Grill each sandwich over medium heat for about 2ā3 minutes per side until golden brown and the cheese is melted.
- Slice in half and serve warm. Perfect with pickles or fries!
Tip: Use a mix of Swiss and cheddar for an even more flavorful melt.
