π Chicago-Style Bakery Apple Slices
Soft cinnamon apples, buttery crust, and a sweet glaze β just like the classic bakery slices everyone loves.
My husband & kids are big fans π
Ingredients
Crust
- 2 Β½ cups all-purpose flour
- Β½ cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp baking powder
- Β½ tsp salt
- 1 cup cold butter, cubed
- 2 large eggs
Apple Filling
- 6 cups apples, peeled and thinly sliced (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
- Β½ cup granulated sugar
- ΒΌ cup brown sugar
- 2 tbsp cornstarch
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- ΒΌ tsp nutmeg
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Glaze
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2β3 tbsp milk or cream
- Β½ tsp vanilla
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350Β°F (175Β°C). Line a 9Γ13-inch pan with parchment paper.
- In a bowl, mix flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Cut in cold butter until crumbly.
- Add eggs and mix until a soft dough forms.
- Press about β of the dough evenly into the bottom of the pan.
- In another bowl, toss apples with sugars, cornstarch, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla.
- Spread apple mixture evenly over the crust.
- Crumble remaining dough over the apples.
- Bake for 40β45 minutes, until golden and bubbly.
- Cool completely.
Glaze
- Whisk powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth.
- Drizzle generously over cooled apple slices.
- Cut into squares and serve.
Tip: These taste even better the next day once the flavors settle β just like a real Chicago bakery!
