Cheesy Stuffed Burger Casserole

Cheesy Stuffed Burger Casserole
Juicy seasoned beef patties in a savory gravy topped with melted cheese — perfect for dinner parties and family nights.
Ingredients
- 1½ lbs (700 g) ground beef (80/20)
- ½ cup (60 g) breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- 1 small onion, finely chopped (about 75 g), divided
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp Dijon mustard
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 2 tbsp olive oil (for searing)
- 2 cups (480 ml) beef gravy (store-bought or homemade)
- ½ cup (120 ml) heavy cream or whole milk (optional)
- 2 cups (200 g) shredded cheddar or mozzarella (plus extra for topping)
- 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat: Oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch (23×33 cm) baking dish.
- Make the patties: In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, half the onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon, salt and pepper. Mix gently—don’t overwork.
- Form patties: Divide into 8 equal portions and form flattened patties. (Optional: press a small well in center for extra cheese.)
- Sear: Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Sear patties 1–2 minutes per side until browned. Transfer to the baking dish.
- Make gravy: In the same skillet sauté remaining onion 2–3 minutes, then add beef gravy and cream (if using). Bring to a simmer and scrape browned bits.
- Assemble: Pour gravy over the patties, sprinkle shredded cheese evenly over the top.
- Bake: Bake 25–30 minutes until cooked through and cheese is melted. Broil 1–2 minutes for browned top if desired.
- Rest & serve: Let rest 5 minutes. Garnish with parsley and serve with mashed potatoes, rice or bread.
Tips: • Use a quality beef gravy for best flavor, or make a quick gravy by deglazing the pan with a splash of beef stock and simmering with a slurry of 1 tbsp cornstarch + 2 tbsp water.
• To make ahead: sear patties and refrigerate; pour gravy and cheese over them when ready to bake. Bake straight from the fridge (add 5–7 minutes).
• For a cheeseburger twist, fold diced pickles and a tablespoon of ketchup into the beef mixture.
