Amish-Style Slow Cooker Chicken & Potatoes
Just 4 simple ingredients layered in the crockpot for tender, juicy chicken and buttery potatoes.
An older Amish neighbor shared this trick for busy summer days.
There is almost no prep involved—just layer four simple ingredients in the slow cooker
and let it do the work. The chicken turns incredibly tender while the potatoes soak up
all those savory juices.

Ingredients
- 6 bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs
- 1½ lbs (680 g) baby yellow potatoes
- 1 packet dry onion soup mix
- ½ cup (120 g) butter, melted
Optional: Fresh parsley and black pepper for serving.
Instructions
- Prepare the potatoes:
Wash the baby potatoes thoroughly. Leave them whole if they are small,
or cut larger potatoes in half so they cook evenly. - Layer the potatoes:
Place the potatoes evenly across the bottom of a 6-quart slow cooker. - Add the chicken:
Pat the chicken thighs dry and arrange them skin-side up over the potatoes. - Add the seasoning:
Sprinkle the dry onion soup mix evenly over the chicken and potatoes. - Add the butter:
Pour the melted butter over everything, making sure the chicken is well coated. - Slow cook:
Cover and cook on LOW for 5–6 hours, or until the chicken is completely tender
and reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C). - Finish:
Carefully spoon some of the flavorful cooking juices over the chicken and potatoes.
Let everything rest for 5 minutes before serving. - Serve:
Garnish with chopped fresh parsley and a little freshly cracked black pepper if desired.
Helpful Tips
- Use similarly sized baby potatoes so they cook evenly.
- Don’t add extra salt—the onion soup mix is already seasoned.
- Keep the slow cooker covered while cooking.
- For crispier chicken skin, transfer the cooked thighs to a baking sheet and broil briefly.
Serving Ideas
- Serve with steamed green beans.
- Add a crisp garden salad.
- Serve with warm dinner rolls.
- Spoon the buttery pan juices over the potatoes before serving.
Amish-Style Shortcut:
The secret is keeping the ingredient list simple. Layer the potatoes first,
place the chicken on top, then add the seasoning and butter. The slow cooker
creates a rich, savory cooking liquid without requiring a complicated sauce.

Storage & Reheating
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
- Reheat gently in the microwave or in a covered skillet over low heat.
- Add a spoonful of the reserved cooking juices when reheating to keep the chicken moist.
Easy Variations
- Garlic version: Add several cloves of minced garlic.
- Herb version: Add fresh thyme or rosemary.
- Vegetable version: Add carrots or green beans during the final cooking hours.
- Boneless version: Use boneless chicken thighs, reducing the cooking time as needed.
