🍎 Chicago-Style Bakery Apple Slices

Soft cinnamon apples, buttery crust, and a sweet glaze — just like the classic bakery slices everyone loves.
My husband & kids are big fans 😋

Ingredients

Crust

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup cold butter, cubed
  • 2 large eggs

Apple Filling

  • 6 cups apples, peeled and thinly sliced (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp nutmeg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Glaze

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2–3 tbsp milk or cream
  • ½ tsp vanilla

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9×13-inch pan with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, mix flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Cut in cold butter until crumbly.
  3. Add eggs and mix until a soft dough forms.
  4. Press about ⅔ of the dough evenly into the bottom of the pan.
  5. In another bowl, toss apples with sugars, cornstarch, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla.
  6. Spread apple mixture evenly over the crust.
  7. Crumble remaining dough over the apples.
  8. Bake for 40–45 minutes, until golden and bubbly.
  9. Cool completely.

Glaze

  1. Whisk powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth.
  2. Drizzle generously over cooled apple slices.
  3. Cut into squares and serve.
Tip: These taste even better the next day once the flavors settle — just like a real Chicago bakery!
