German Creamed Potatoes

German Creamed Potatoes 🥔🇩🇪
Passed down from my German nana 👵🏻, this creamy potato dish is rich, comforting, and full of nostalgia. Perfect for Sunday dinners or holidays — it’s a simple yet unforgettable side that everyone loves!
Ingredients
- 2 lbs potatoes (Yukon Gold or Russet), peeled and sliced
- 3 tbsp butter
- 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 ½ cups whole milk
- ½ cup heavy cream
- ½ small onion, finely chopped
- ½ tsp salt (or to taste)
- ¼ tsp black pepper
- Pinch of nutmeg (optional, for authentic German flavor)
Instructions
- Boil Potatoes: Place sliced potatoes in a large pot, cover with salted water, and boil until just tender (about 10–12 minutes). Drain and set aside.
- Make the Cream Sauce: In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in chopped onion and cook until soft and fragrant (about 3 minutes).
- Add Flour: Sprinkle in the flour, stirring constantly for 1–2 minutes to form a roux.
- Add Milk & Cream: Gradually whisk in milk and cream, stirring until smooth and thickened.
- Season: Add salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Adjust to taste.
- Combine: Gently fold the cooked potatoes into the creamy sauce. Heat through for 2–3 minutes until fully coated and warm.
- Serve: Sprinkle with extra pepper or nutmeg before serving. Enjoy hot! 😋
💡 Tips & Variations
