Poppy Seed Roll Recipe

Ingredients:

For the Dough:

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 package (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup warm milk (110°F/45°C)
  • ¼ cup melted butter
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons poppy seeds

For the Egg Wash:

  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon water

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Dough:

In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm milk. Allow it to sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt.
Add the yeast mixture, melted butter, and eggs to the dry ingredients. Stir until the dough starts to come together.
Mix in the poppy seeds.
Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for 8 to 10 minutes, until smooth and elastic.

2. First Rise:

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.

3. Shape the Rolls:

Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air.
Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces and shape each piece into a round roll.
Arrange the rolls in a greased baking pan or muffin tin.

4. Second Rise:

Cover the rolls with a towel and let them rise for another 30 to 45 minutes, or until doubled in size.

5. Prepare the Egg Wash:

In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and water.

6. Bake the Rolls:

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Brush the tops of the rolls with the egg wash.
Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, until the rolls are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.

7. Cool and Serve:

Once baked, remove the rolls from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack.
